ABOUT THE COURSE

The Wellington Final Exam Course runs twice yearly over three days. The first day consists of lectures and a practice SAQ session. Invited specialists give lectures relevant to the medical vivas, covering the major organ systems.

The following two days consist of practice vivas under examination conditions, requiring formal attire. Each candidate will experience practice medical vivas, anaesthetic vivas and a separate anaesthetic viva which will be videoed and individually debriefed with a clinical psychologist. When not participating in a viva session, candidates will have access to data interpretation stations. The contents of these stations have been selected by anaesthetists to be relevant to the medical component of the examination.

We receive very positive feedback and our candidates achieve a good pass rate at the final examination.

Course dates will be published here as well as the ANZCA website when they have been set for the following exam sitting.

FAQ

FAQ

Do you run the course before each sitting of the exam?

Yes - The course runs twice a year before the Final Exam, traditionally in February and July.

How can I register to be made aware of dates or course registration opening?

You can use the website to send us through your details. Alternatively, you can email directly at RES-FANZCA@ccdhb.org.nz. Please note that between course times this email may be checked sporadically.

I'm planning on sitting the exam in the first sitting - when should I do the course?

The course is designed for those sitting the exam in the next sitting - if the course is oversubscribed then we check with ANZCA that you are registered for the exam before allocating a place

I've missed out on the course before - is there anything I can do to maximise my chances of getting a place?

I have missed out - how come you can't increase candidate numbers or provide a virtual option?

Unfortunately no - if the course is oversubscribed available places are allocated by random ballot

Due to the interactive nature of the sessions it is logistically difficult to provide these effectively via a virtual platform, so we are not currently running a virtual option. We have tried different candidate numbers over previous sittings and 24 is the maximum we can comfortably accommodate.

What should I wear to the the course?

We do expect formal dress for the anaesthesia viva components of the course - this can be whatever feels appropriate to you, and an opportunity to wear what you are considering wearing to the exam. A suit jacket is not essential.

For the remainder of the course sessions feel free to wear whatever is comfortable for you
